Adolphus Cambridge was a member of the British royal family and a career soldier, known for his links to the Victorian and Edwardian courts. Born a Prince of Teck, he was the brother of Queen Mary and the grandson of Adolphe, Duke of Cambridge; he succeeded his father as Duke of Teck in 1900. His military education included Sandhurst and cavalry service, with participation in the Second Boer War and later appointments in the General Staff and as a military attaché in Vienna. During the First World War he served as military secretary to the commander‑in‑chief of the British Expeditionary Forces and rose to the temporary rank of brigadier‑general, receiving British and allied decorations. In 1917, in response to the anti‑German climate, he relinquished his German titles and adopted the surname Cambridge, being raised into the British peerage as 1st Marquess of Cambridge. After the war he retired to Shropshire, where he engaged in local administration as a justice of the peace and lieutenant‑of‑the‑county, and presided over institutions such as the Salop Royal Infirmary. He died in 1927, leaving descendants who retained positions in the British aristocracy and a legacy tied both to military traditions and to the royal family's adaptation to the changes of the period.
