George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, was an English statesman and poet who played a significant role at the court of Charles II during the Restoration. The son of King James I’s favorite, he survived his father’s assassination as an infant and was raised close to the royal family, educated at Trinity College and given instruction in geometry by Thomas Hobbes. A Royalist, he fought in the Civil War and took part in notable episodes such as the Battle of Worcester and the subsequent escape that inspired chivalric legends.
After years of exile and complex negotiations with Cromwell, Buckingham returned to prominence at the Restoration, becoming a member of the Privy Council and an influential figure in the ministry known as the Cabal. Known for his skill in organizing and leading parliamentary factions, he became embroiled in disputes with major political rivals like the Earl of Clarendon and experienced alternating periods of imprisonment and royal favor.
Alongside his political career, he took an interest in science and letters and authored satires and plays. His career reflected the upheavals of seventeenth‑century English politics: courtly influence, parliamentary intrigue, and rivalries that made him a controversial yet central figure in the restoration of the monarchy.
