Alastair Arthur Windsor, 2nd Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, was a British noble of the royal family and a great‑grandson of Queen Victoria through the male line. Born in 1914, he was styled His Royal Highness at birth, but in 1917 lost the princely title and the style of His Highness by decree of King George V, who curtailed royal styles amid the anti‑German sentiment generated by the First World War. Educated at Bryanston School and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Alastair pursued a military career with the Scots Greys (Royal Scots Greys), receiving his commission as a second lieutenant in 1935. In 1939 he was appointed an aide‑de‑camp in Ottawa to the Earl of Athlone, then Governor General of Canada, a post connected to the imperial public service roles his family had previously held. He inherited the titles Duke of Connaught and Strathearn and Earl of Sussex in 1942 on the death of his grandfather. He died on duty in Ottawa in 1943 under circumstances described as unusual; contemporary accounts report that his death followed a fall from a window and subsequent hypothermia, an episode that prompted questions about his military fitness and personal situation. His short life reflects the dynastic tensions and reforms of the early twentieth century and the shift of royal family members into military and administrative roles within the empire.
