Aaron Burr Jr. was an American lawyer, businessman, and politician, best known for serving as the third Vice President of the United States (1801–1805) during Thomas Jefferson’s first term. A central figure in the early Republic, he became a leader within the Democratic–Republican Party and served in the U.S. Senate before joining the executive branch. His public career was marked by controversy: in 1804 he shot and killed former Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton in a duel, an episode that damaged his reputation, and he was later accused of conspiring to establish an independent state in the western borderlands — the so‑called Burr conspiracy — for which he was tried and acquitted. After leaving the vice presidency he withdrew from national politics and pursued business ventures in the American West. He later returned to practicing law in New York, where he partially rebuilt his public and professional life. His legacy is ambiguous: on one hand an influential figure in the formative years of the young republic; on the other, forever linked to scandals and a career that reflects the political and territorial tensions of the post‑Revolutionary era.
