Abu Rayḥān al‑Bīrūnī was a Persian polymath whose work spanned astronomy, mathematics, geography, history and anthropology. Known for observational precision and a critical use of sources, he became notable for astronomical measurements and theoretical contributions — including studies on polar coordinates and methods for calculating latitude and longitude that anticipated aspects of modern geodesy.

His experience as a traveler and researcher, notably the expeditions to India while at the Ghaznavid court, produced the work India, a comprehensive ethnographic and scientific study of the subcontinent’s religions, customs, systems of knowledge and calendrical practices. This comparative approach has earned him recognition as a forerunner of Indology and the comparative history of religions.

A prolific author, he is credited with about 146 works covering both editions of original texts and syntheses across many fields of knowledge. Although he lived in a medieval Islamic context, his reputation crossed borders and influenced later scientific traditions, leaving a lasting legacy in methods of observation, translation and critical analysis.
