Abraham Lincoln was an American lawyer and politician who served as President of the United States from 1861 to 1865, a period in which the country faced the Civil War. He led the Union in preserving the nation’s territorial integrity and in directing the military and diplomatic policies that prevented international recognition of the Confederate government.
Raised in a poor family on the western frontier, Lincoln became a public figure as a state legislator and congressman, distinguishing himself in debates opposing the expansion of slavery. Elected as the Republican candidate in 1860, his victory hastened the secession of slaveholding states and triggered the conflict that defined his presidency.
Among his most significant achievements were signing the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared enslaved people in rebel-held areas to be free, and giving crucial impetus to the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery. He is also remembered for his rhetorical skill—most notably the Gettysburg Address—and for seeking, at the war’s end, a Reconstruction based on national reconciliation.
Assassinated in 1865, Lincoln left a lasting legacy as a symbol of the struggle for national unity, equality, and a strengthened federal government, and he is frequently ranked among the greatest U.S. presidents.
