Abraham ben Samuel Zacuto was a Sephardic astronomer, mathematician, rabbi and author whose work was prominent from the late 15th into the early 16th century. Trained and teaching at Salamanca, he became a recognized figure in Iberian astronomy and, after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain, took refuge in Portugal, where he was appointed Royal Astronomer and Historian. His work informed the court’s consultations on the period’s maritime navigation and exploration. Zacuto is chiefly remembered for his nautical innovations: he improved the metal astrolabe and compiled astronomical tables — published at Leiria in 1496 as Bi'ur luḥot/Almanach Perpetuum — that served as practical instruments for Portuguese pilots on long voyages. Sources attribute the use of those tables and his astrolabe to expeditions such as those of Vasco da Gama and Pedro Álvares Cabral. In addition to his contributions to navigation, he wrote works in Hebrew, among them Sefer ha-yuḥasin, a widely circulated Jewish history that was reprinted in subsequent centuries. The combination of scientific expertise and scholarly production secured Zacuto a lasting place in the history of Iberian astronomy and navigation.
