Al De Lory was an American record producer, arranger, conductor and session musician whose work played a decisive role in popular music of the 1960s and 1970s. A member of the celebrated Los Angeles studio group known as The Wrecking Crew, he distinguished himself as a pianist and arranger on emblematic recordings of the period, participating in productions associated with the “Wall of Sound” and on albums such as Pet Sounds. As a producer and arranger for Capitol, De Lory wrote the arrangements for a series of Glen Campbell hits — including “Gentle on My Mind,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman” and “Galveston” — which brought him critical recognition and awards. Earlier, he co-wrote the 1960 number-one hit “Mr. Custer,” and played a notable role on surf rock and pop recordings. In the 1970s he moved his career to Nashville, where he produced country artists and film scores, led instrumental projects and formed Latin jazz groups. Recognized for his influence on arrangements and the sound of countless recordings, he was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum, leaving a legacy as a connector between studio work, arranging and production.
