Alban Berg was an Austrian composer associated with the Second Viennese School, the movement that redefined musical language in the early twentieth century. A pupil of Arnold Schoenberg, Berg became known for combining twelve-tone technique with a distinctly Romantic sensibility, preserving expression and drama even within atonal structures. His best-known work is the Violin Concerto, and among his principal achievements are the operas Wozzeck — a critical and public success at its 1924 premiere — and the unfinished Lulu. He also wrote chamber works and lieder that display sophisticated formal articulation and emotional density. Active in Vienna’s vibrant cultural scene, he maintained relationships with figures such as Gustav Klimt and Adolf Loos, reflecting the period’s interweaving of the arts. Berg’s work influenced later generations by demonstrating how twelve-tone technique could coexist with European harmonic tradition, securing him a prominent place in the twentieth-century musical canon.
