Albert Calmette was a French physician, bacteriologist, and immunologist associated with the Pasteur Institute, known chiefly for two major scientific contributions. In toxicology and serotherapy, he developed the first effective antivenom for snakebite—the so-called Calmette serum—produced from immunized horses, a work that influenced antivenom practices in several regions worldwide. His most lasting legacy came from tuberculosis research in collaboration with Camille Guérin. Together they developed Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), an attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis used as an antituberculosis vaccine. The BCG underwent prolonged attenuation and was first used in humans in 1921, later becoming, after improvements in production methods, the basis of mass vaccination programs in many countries. Beyond research, Calmette organized and directed Pasteur Institute branches in Saigon, Lille, and Algiers, founded dispensaries and anti-tuberculosis leagues, and participated in epidemic responses, such as the plague in Oporto in 1899. His work influenced public health and immunization practices in the early twentieth century and left institutional legacies in several countries.
