Alessandro Volta was an Italian physicist and chemist, recognized as a pioneer in the study of electricity and the inventor of the voltaic pile. His experiments with pairs of metals and conductive media led, in 1799–1800, to the creation of the first battery capable of producing continuous current, a milestone that opened the field of electrochemistry and radically changed the experimental and technological possibilities of the time. Volta also contributed to the chemistry of gases and is credited with the discovery and isolation of methane. His work on electricity was directly connected to the experiments of Luigi Galvani: Volta challenged the idea of “animal electricity,” proposing that the observed currents resulted from the action of dissimilar metals and demonstrating this with apparatus and careful measurements. Professor of experimental physics in Pavia for decades, Volta had great influence on students and colleagues and reached public prominence that earned him honors, including from Napoleon. His name was immortalized in the unit of electric potential—the volt—and his technical and institutional legacy remains visible, for example, in the museum dedicated to his work in Como.
