Alex Trocchi was a Scottish novelist and cultural agitator associated with the postwar literary avant-garde. Trained in English and philosophy at the University of Glasgow, he moved to continental Europe and became a central figure in alternative literary magazines in Paris, where he edited work by authors such as Beckett and Neruda and collaborated with avant‑garde publishers. Author of novels, essays and experimental texts, Trocchi gained notoriety with Cain’s Book, a semi‑autobiographical account of heroin addiction that provoked controversy and obscenity prosecutions in the United Kingdom while receiving favorable reviews in the United States. He also wrote under various pseudonyms and produced erotic literature published by the Olympia Press. Politically restless, he took part in international avant‑garde currents — including Lettrisme and the Situationist International — and proposed cultural projects such as a “spontaneous university” that influenced the British underground. His work and life, marked by talent and drug dependence, left an ambivalent legacy: they revived critical interest after his death and influenced later generations of writers and editors.
