Alexandre Dumas fils was a French author and playwright, celebrated for establishing the social and moral drama of the 19th century. He rose to prominence with the novel The Lady of the Camellias (1848), inspired by his relationship with the courtesan Marie Duplessis; the work became a highly successful stage play and the basis for Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La traviata. That theatrical triumph launched his career as a dramatist and made him a dominant presence on the French stage in the second half of the 19th century.

The son of the also-famous Alexandre Dumas, Dumas fils directed his writing toward ethical and social questions, emphasizing moral responsibility in relationships—an explicit theme in plays such as The Illegitimate Son (1858). His works often address the fate of women and social hypocrisy, reflecting personal experience and the cultural context of his time.

Institutionally recognized, he was elected to the Académie française in 1874 and awarded the Legion of Honor in 1894. His legacy endures chiefly through his influence on realist theatre and the international reach of The Lady of the Camellias, whose cultural impact extended across literature, opera, and film.
