Alexis Carrel was a French surgeon and biologist whose advances in vascular suturing and experimental surgery transformed transplant and transfusion practices in the early 20th century. A pioneer of techniques to invert vessel edges and use paraffinized material in sutures, he was able to join vessels as small as one millimeter, reducing hemorrhage and thrombosis and enabling operations previously impractical. His work on autografts, organ transplantation and vascular preservation (cold storage) expanded the possibilities of reconstructive surgery. While working in the United States at the University of Chicago and the Rockefeller Institute, Carrel also helped develop the antiseptic solution known as Carrel–Dakin, widely used during the First World War, and designed experimental devices that anticipated concepts of artificial circulation. In 1912 he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his innovative methods of vascular suturing and transplantation. Beyond his scientific work, he published reflections on the human condition; his best-known book, L’Homme, cet inconnu (1935), reached a wide readership, though it contains ideas now viewed as controversial. His career left a lasting technical legacy in vascular surgery and transplantation, and his name has been commemorated, among other honors, by a lunar crater.
