Alfred Binet was a French educator and psychologist whose work shaped modern psychometrics. Trained initially in law, he turned to scientific research and for decades directed the Psychophysiology Laboratory at the Sorbonne. His academic activity included founding the journal L'Année Psychologique, a outlet for publishing experimental psychology research. Binet is best known for creating, in partnership with Théodore Simon, the Binet–Simon Scale — a set of simple tests, usable in primary schools, designed to measure individual differences and to introduce the concept of “mental age.” These scales, developed between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, provided the basis for many later intelligence tests and influenced educational policies aimed at children with learning difficulties. Besides the scales, Binet published studies on reasoning, associations of ideas, and the psychology of children and prodigies. His method favored practical tasks using accessible materials (paper, pencil, pictures) and careful observation, and his experiments anticipated projective techniques used by later generations. His legacy remains central to the history of psychological assessment and experimental pedagogy.
