Alfred Edmund Brehm was a German naturalist and writer whose work popularized zoology in the 19th century. The son of a noted ornithologist, he began collecting and studying animals at an early age and joined expeditions to North Africa while still young, earning scientific recognition and paving the way for a career devoted to observation and popular natural history. As an author, Brehm achieved wide renown with the monumental multivolume work known as Brehms Tierleben, an editorial project that established his reputation among educated readers and became a standard reference in animal popularization. His writings blended travel accounts, descriptions of animal behavior, and illustrations, contributing to the scientific education of the European bourgeoisie. Beyond his publishing activity, Brehm held important institutional positions: he was the first director of the Hamburg Zoo and later founded an aquarium in Berlin, combining research, collecting techniques, and public display. His expeditions to regions such as Scandinavia, Siberia, and various parts of Africa provided much of the material for his writings. Brehm’s legacy lies chiefly in bringing natural history to a broad public and in creating a popular zoological imagination; although technical interpretations of his ethology have been superseded, his work remains a milestone in the history of scientific popularization.
