Alfred Gause was a German general officer whose career was notable for his service as a chief of staff in campaigns of the Second World War, especially alongside Erwin Rommel in North Africa. A First World War veteran, he served in the small Reichswehr during the 1920s–30s and later in the Reich’s general staff, taking part in planning the 1938 expansions and holding posts in the German high command.
During the Second World War, Gause built a reputation as a capable logistics and coordination officer, serving in several army corps and as a liaison officer with the Italians. In 1941 he was sent to North Africa and ultimately accepted the post of Rommel’s chief of staff, a position he held for more than two years, accompanying desert operations and assuming critical responsibilities for maintaining command and communications between fronts.
Awarded the Knight’s Cross, Gause faced political tensions and command difficulties within the Italo‑German alliance but was praised by Rommel for professional clarity and energy. After the African campaign he served in staff roles in Italy and in the defense of France, maintaining a significant technical role until the end of the conflict.
