Alfred North Whitehead was a British mathematician, logician and philosopher whose work moved from pure mathematics to an original metaphysics that influenced many areas of thought. In mathematics he was notable for A Treatise on Universal Algebra (1898) and, in collaboration with Bertrand Russell, the monumental Principia Mathematica (1910–1913), a central work in logic and the foundations of twentieth‑century mathematics. From the 1910s he shifted his focus to the philosophy of science and nature, producing works such as The Principles of Natural Knowledge (1919) and The Concept of Nature (1920). In 1929 he published Process and Reality, his magnum opus that establishes what became known as process philosophy, a metaphysics of becoming that emphasizes interdependence and continuous change. His philosophical system influenced fields as diverse as ecology, theology, education and the philosophy of science, and informed discussions on environmental ethics and social theory. A professor at British institutions and, from 1924, at Harvard, Whitehead left a lasting legacy in both logic and contemporary metaphysics.
