Alison Bechdel is an American cartoonist and writer, known for transforming autobiographical material into comics with broad cultural impact. She first rose to prominence with the strip series Dykes to Watch Out For (1983–2008), which addressed questions of identity and lesbian relationships in a conservative cultural context, and introduced the now-famous Bechdel Test for assessing female representation in fiction. Her work reached a new level with the graphic memoir Fun Home (2006), a family account blending tragedy and comedy that examines her relationship with her father and themes such as sexuality, grief, and memory. The book won major awards, attracted international critical acclaim, and inspired an award-winning Broadway musical adaptation. Fun Home was also recognized by Time magazine and by leading literary and comics prizes. In 2012 she published Are You My Mother?, which explores her relationship with her mother through psychoanalytic and literary references, consolidating her introspective, intertextual approach. She has received fellowships and honors, including a MacArthur Fellowship, and has had a significant impact on contemporary comics, influencing debates about gender, family, and representation.
