Ana Botella Serrano is a Spanish politician affiliated with the Partido Popular, known for being the first woman to serve as mayor of Madrid, from 2011 to 2015. Before leading the municipality, she built a career as a civil servant in several ministries and worked within the party’s local organization: she was a Madrid city councillor from 2003 to 2011 and served as deputy mayor under Alberto Ruiz‑Gallardón, first overseeing Social Services and later Environment. During her tenure responsible for environmental matters, Botella faced public criticism over the city’s air quality management, which at times exceeded permitted limits. She also became noted for expressing skeptical views about the evidence for climate change, which shaped part of the public debate on municipal environmental policy. She became mayor in December 2011, succeeding Ruiz‑Gallardón when he entered the central government; in 2014 she announced she would not run for re‑election in 2015. She is also known for her family connection to former prime minister José María Aznar, to whom she has been married since 1977.
