André Gustave Citroën was a French engineer and entrepreneur, a pioneer of the automotive industry and founder of the Citroën group. Trained at the École Polytechnique, he became known for adapting double‑helical gears—the chevron tooth pattern that gives his brand its name and emblem—and for introducing technical innovations, such as high‑compression engines, that shaped automobile production after World War I. During the Great War he led mass production of military materiel, an experience that eased his factory’s transition to automobile manufacturing from 1919 onward. The company grew rapidly: by the early 1930s Citroën was already among the world’s largest manufacturers. Known both for his industrial vision and a megalomaniacal personality, Citroën pursued rapid expansion that ultimately produced financial difficulties and prompted Michelin’s intervention to avert bankruptcy. His legacy includes technical innovations, the creation of an influential automotive brand, and an urban memory in Paris—the quai André‑Citroën and the park occupying the site of the former factory.
