Andreas Burnier, the pen name of Catharina Irma Dessaur, was a Dutch writer, philosopher and criminologist whose work shaped debates about gender, identity and minority rights in the twentieth century. Her literary output includes novels, short stories, poems and essays that frequently address homosexuality and the condition of women in a society governed by masculine values; her debut novel, Een tevreden lach (1965), was read as one of the early voices of the second-wave feminist movement in the Netherlands.
Much of Burnier’s fiction is autobiographical in nature: characters searching for identity, anxiety about social roles, and reflections on Judaism and the experience of hiding during the Second World War. Jongensuur (1969) revisits the experience of a Jewish childhood under persecution and the distress of a divergent gender identity.
Alongside her literary career, she trained in criminology and taught as a university professor at the Catholic University of Nijmegen from 1973 to 1988, balancing academic work and cultural activism. Known for defending LGBT rights and for analyzing the tensions between suffering, memory and political action, she left a legacy as an important reference for gender studies and literature committed to social change.
