Andrée Babelay appears in Brazilian history as one of the women linked to the notorious case of Henri Désiré Landru, the so-called French "Bluebeard." Identified among the women drawn to matrimonial advertisements, her name entered the investigation that uncovered a pattern of fraud, seduction and presumed murders committed by Landru between 1914 and 1918.
The case drew wide public attention because of the calculated nature of the crimes: Landru used correspondence to woo war widows, appropriating their property and making the victims disappear. The material evidence found at the defendant’s home — letters, clippings and an account book with amounts — proved crucial in tying him to the missing women, although bodies were absent in many instances.
Tried in 1921, Landru was sentenced to death and executed on 25 February 1922. The trial became a media spectacle in a country still reeling from the traumas of the First World War and influenced later cultural works. The case remains an historical example of a serial crime sustained by sentimental fraud and the exploitation of social vulnerabilities.
