An archduchess of Habsburg origin, Assunta belonged to the Tuscan branch of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. Born in Vienna in 1902, she was the youngest daughter of Archduke Leopold Salvator and Princess Blanca of Bourbon, and she spent a privileged childhood in the final years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The fall of the monarchy and the subsequent expropriation of the family’s property forced them into exile in Barcelona, where they lived modestly. In Barcelona she was drawn to religious life and entered a convent, from which she had to leave in 1936 because of the disturbances of the Spanish Civil War. In the late 1930s she married Joseph Hopfinger, a Polish physician, and in 1942 they emigrated to the United States to escape the persecution of Jews in Europe. She had two daughters; the marriage ended in divorce in 1950. Settled in San Antonio, Texas, she lived discreetly, supporting herself with ordinary jobs while remaining faithful to her Catholic faith. Assunta’s life—from archduchess to anonymous existence in America—reflects the profound political and social changes of the twentieth century and the effects of lost status and fortune on exiled royal families.
