Archduchess of the Modena branch of the House of Habsburg‑Lorraine, Maria Beatrix Anna Franziska was a prominent figure of the European high nobility in the 19th century. Daughter of the sovereign Duke of Modena, she ceased to be only an archduchess when she married Infante Juan of Bourbon in 1847, becoming Countess of Montizón in a union that tied her to the Carlist and Legitimist dynastic disputes in Spain and France. The couple had two sons, Carlos and Alfonso Carlos, who later led the Carlist claims; although she separated from her husband in 1853 and did not press personal titles, Maria Beatrix later supported her eldest son’s pretensions. After Modena was annexed to the nascent Kingdom of Italy, she spent much of her life in exile in the Austrian Empire. In different contemporary dynastic reckonings she was regarded as queen consort — by the Carlists in Spain (1861–1868) and by the Legitimists in France (1883–1887) — a reflection of the era’s fragmented and competing dynastic claims. In her later years she withdrew to religious institutions, living in monasteries between 1872 and 1898, and died in Graz in 1906, leaving a legacy connected to the European dynastic networks of her time.
