Isabella Clara of Austria was an archduchess by birth who became duchess consort of Mantua and Montferrato through her marriage to Carlo II Gonzaga. A member of the Habsburg family with ties to the courts of Tuscany and the Holy Roman Empire, her marriage served a strong political purpose, helping to preserve Gonzaga domains amid seventeenth‑century French and Spanish pressures. During the regency (1665–1669) on behalf of her minor son, Ferdinando Carlo, Isabella Clara governed the duchy, maintaining a neutral stance between France and Spain and introducing administrative and fiscal measures that strengthened the economy and territorial defense. Under her administration, the state expanded holdings in the Po Valley and secured rights over disputed fiefs. The duchess’s private life precipitated her public downfall: after a relationship with her secretary and adviser, Carlo Bulgarini, she married him in secret and was ultimately compelled by the emperor to enter a convent, where she was confined and dressed as a nun until her death. Her legacy combines effective political rule as regent with a controversial personal fate that ended her public influence.
