Karl Ludwig Joseph Maria of Austria was an archduke of the House of Habsburg and a prominent figure in the Austrian aristocracy of the nineteenth century. Born at the Schönbrunn Palace, he was the son of Archduke Franz Karl and Princess Sophie of Bavaria and the brother of Emperors Franz Joseph I and Maximilian of Mexico, which placed his life at the heart of the political and dynastic dynamics of the Austro‑Hungarian Empire.
Over the course of his life he married three times, creating ties with other European royal houses: first to Margaretha of Saxony; then to Maria Annunciata of the Two Sicilies, with whom he had children including Archduke Franz Ferdinand; and finally to Infanta Maria Theresa of Portugal, whose descendants included, among others, Franz Joseph II of Liechtenstein. These marriages reinforced dynastic alliances and produced heirs who played notable roles in succession and dynastic politics.
Karl Ludwig never ascended the throne, but his place near the head of the imperial family and the offspring he produced affected the European dynastic landscape. He died in Vienna of typhoid fever, leaving a legacy defined chiefly by the family connections that influenced successions and networks of power among sovereign houses.
