Archie Griffin is a former American football player, best known for his dominant college career as a running back for the Ohio State Buckeyes. He was the first and only athlete to win the Heisman Trophy twice, an honor that capped his starring roles in the 1974 and 1975 seasons and placed him among the greatest players in college football. Under his leadership, Ohio State won four Big Ten titles, and Griffin became the first player to start four Rose Bowls, setting records for productivity and consistency — including a streak of 31 consecutive games with at least 100 rushing yards.
Selected in the first round by the Cincinnati Bengals, he played seven seasons in the NFL and appeared in Super Bowl XVI. In the transition to the professional level he produced reliably as a rusher and receiver, totaling more than 2,800 rushing yards and making a significant contribution in receptions. After his playing career, Griffin held administrative and leadership roles in the sports community: he served as president of the Ohio State alumni association, acted as a spokesman for student awards programs, and sat on boards related to sports and business.
Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and recognized by other halls and honors, his legacy remains tied to collegiate excellence, competitive durability, and an ongoing influence on the culture of college football.
