Art Farmer was an American jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player whose career helped define the lyrical, warm sound of the instruments in the modern era. He performed from his youth in Los Angeles bands and, after gaining attention with the composition "Farmer's Market" (1952), moved to New York, where he played and recorded with figures such as Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins and Gigi Gryce. He became known primarily as a bebop musician but broadened his reach by collaborating with experimental composers and arrangers.
He co-founded the Jazztet with Benny Golson and joined Gerry Mulligan’s quartet, taking part in key jazz milestones of the 1950s and 1960s. Around 1960 he began using the flugelhorn as his principal instrument, helping to establish it as a solo voice in jazz; he also played the flumpet, a hybrid commissioned for his particular tone.
Based in Europe from 1968, he maintained an intense recording and touring schedule, releasing more than 50 albums under his own name as well as numerous sessions with other leaders. His legacy is remembered for a singular sound, interpretive sensitivity and influence on generations of wind players.
