Arthur de Gobineau was a French aristocrat, diplomat, and writer whose work deeply shaped nineteenth-century racial thought. A career diplomat, he served in posts such as Bern, Tehran, Rio de Janeiro, and Stockholm, and kept contacts with political and cultural figures of his time, including Emperor Pedro II of Brazil. As a novelist and essayist, he published novels and numerous travel accounts, but his notoriety stems mainly from a philosophical and pseudo‑scientific essay that made him famous. Among his works, the most influential was Essai sur l'inégalité des races humaines (1853–1855), in which he developed theories about racial hierarchies, Nordicism, and the idea of a superior “Aryan race.” Those theses, which argued that miscegenation caused degeneration and proposed measures such as selective immigration, had wide intellectual repercussions and influenced later racist debates and movements. Gobineau’s literary output is extensive and includes novels, historical writings, and studies of Asian languages and religions. Although valued in certain circles in his time, his legacy is today associated with the emergence of scientific racism, and his work is subject to critical analysis by historians and scholars of the social sciences and intellectual history.
