Arthur Dee was an English physician and alchemist, best known for his service at the courts of Tsar Michael I of Russia and King Charles I of England. The eldest son of the occultist John Dee, he probably completed his medical training abroad and quickly established a medical career, obtaining prestigious posts — among them physician to Queen Anne and, by royal recommendation, physician at the court in Moscow, where he remained for about 14 years. During his long stay in Russia he collected and translated texts on alchemy, an activity that brought him intellectual recognition and led to the publication of the Fasciculus Chemicus (Basel, 1629), a compilation of alchemical writings by medieval and modern authors, later translated into English by Elias Ashmole. Dee also faced professional controversies: in London he was censured by the Royal College of Physicians for promoting medicinal formulas of his own authorship, but he retained enough standing to secure hospital and court appointments. After returning to England he continued to practise successfully in Norwich and cultivated a friendship with the philosopher Sir Thomas Browne, to whom he bequeathed part of his manuscript legacy. His work helped transmit and circulate alchemical traditions between England and continental Europe, leaving influence especially as a compiler and intermediary of esoteric texts.
