Arthur Janov was an American clinical psychologist, psychotherapist, and author best known for creating primal therapy, an approach that proposes reliving and expressing deeply repressed childhood pain as a means of treating emotional disorders. His best-known work, The Primal Scream (1970), along with books such as The Biology of Love and Life Before Birth, set out his ideas and helped spread the therapy beyond clinical circles.
Janov ran institutes in California devoted to the practice and research of primal therapy, where he maintained a private practice for decades and published studies in specialized journals. A proponent of a scientific basis for his methods, he faced criticism and accusations of misuse of the technique and responded by publishing materials and research produced by his team.
Culturally, primal therapy had a strong popular impact in the 1970s and 1980s: it influenced artists such as John Lennon and Yoko Ono and inspired band names and musical themes that explored parental abandonment and psychic suffering. Janov’s legacy remains controversial, combining notable cultural influence with ongoing debate over the method’s validity and risks.
