Augustin-Louis Cauchy was a French mathematician whose work established rigor in nineteenth-century mathematical analysis. Presented in influential courses and treatises, his work precisely defined essential concepts — continuity, limit, convergence of series, and the definite integral — which became pillars for the study of real and complex functions. He published hundreds of articles and long treatises, collected posthumously in multiple volumes, and his output is surpassed by only a few figures in history in terms of volume of work.
Beyond analysis, Cauchy contributed to differential equations, establishing existence and uniqueness theorems under boundary conditions, and worked in combinatorics and in the early development of the theory of finite groups. He also influenced mathematical physics by seeking formal foundations for optical phenomena then explained by the ether.
A professor at institutions such as the École Polytechnique, Collège de France, and the Sorbonne, he left a pedagogical legacy through courses and collections of exercises that trained generations of mathematicians. His career crossed turbulent political contexts — including exile and loss of positions for reasons of conscience — yet he maintained an intense publication pace and established himself as a central figure in the European mathematics of his time.
