Bartel Leendert van der Waerden was a Dutch mathematician whose two-volume book Moderne Algebra, published in 1930, reorganized and systematized algebraic theory in the interwar period and became a standard reference for teaching and research in the field. Trained in Amsterdam and habilitated in Göttingen, he was strongly influenced by Emmy Noether and, while still young, produced work that synthesized the lectures of Noether and Emil Artin. His scientific output extended beyond algebra to include algebraic geometry, number theory, topology, combinatorial analysis, probability and analysis. In 1930 he also published important papers linking him to the resolution of Hilbert’s fifteenth problem, and over his career he supervised more than forty theses, exerting a direct influence on generations of mathematicians. During the Nazi period he refused to adopt German citizenship, which affected his position in Leipzig; after the war he held the chair in Amsterdam (1948–1951) and finished his career at the University of Zurich. Late in life he devoted himself to the history of mathematics and science, publishing studies on the development of algebra and mathematics in ancient civilizations.
