Ben Folds (Benjamin Scott Folds) is an American singer, songwriter and pianist, known for blending virtuoso piano playing with alternative pop. He rose to prominence as the leader of the trio Ben Folds Five, formed in Chapel Hill in the 1990s; their mix of incisive piano, ironic lyrics and melancholic melodies produced hits such as "Brick" and established his international reputation, particularly in the UK and Australia.
After the group's initial run (1993–2000), Folds built a solo career defined by original albums, collaborations and formal experiments — including work with Regina Spektor, "Weird Al" Yankovic, yMusic and projects with writers such as Nick Hornby and Neil Gaiman. He is also known for adapting his repertoire to instrumentations unusual in rock and pop, presenting arrangements with symphony orchestras and a cappella groups.
In addition to music production and soundtrack work for animation, Folds has taken on curatorial and educational roles: he served as artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center (2017–2025) and appeared as a judge on an a cappella television program. His career combines pianistic performance, composition and interdisciplinary initiatives that broadened the reach of contemporary pop repertoire.
