Benedict Nicolson was a British art historian known for his studies of Baroque and modern painters, notably his research on Caravaggio. The son of Harold Nicolson and Vita Sackville‑West, he grew up at Sissinghurst and moved in circles close to the Bloomsbury Group, a cultural background that influenced his editorial and critical work. Educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, he devoted himself to art criticism and curatorship. In 1939 he became deputy curator of the Royal Collection, a post interrupted by the Second World War when he served in the Intelligence Corps; he returned in 1945 to resume work with the royal holdings. As editor of the Burlington Magazine he succeeded Ellis Waterhouse and contributed to scholarly debate on European painting. He published monographs and studies on artists such as Hendrick Terbrugghen, Wright of Derby, Courbet and Georges de La Tour, as well as works on collections and art institutions. His legacy lies in combining rigorous research with curatorial practice, strengthening critical study of masters who had received less attention in British scholarship of the time and influencing generations of historians and conservators.
