Bernard Herrmann was an American composer and conductor, recognized as one of the leading figures in 20th‑century film music. His career ranged from iconic scores for directors such as Alfred Hitchcock — including Psycho, Vertigo, North by Northwest and The Man Who Knew Too Much — to radio collaborations with Orson Welles and work for filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver) and François Truffaut (Fahrenheit 451).
Winner of an Academy Award for the music to The Devil and Daniel Webster (reissued as All That Money Can Buy), Herrmann became known for his expressive orchestration, innovative timbres and leitmotifs that deepened a film’s drama. He also composed for classics such as Citizen Kane, The Day the Earth Stood Still and Cape Fear, and produced themes and episodes for television series, notably The Twilight Zone.
Beyond his film scores, he wrote incidental music for radio, orchestral works and pieces for television, helping to consolidate the sonic language of cinema. His legacy endures in his influence on generations of composers and in the ways music can shape a film’s atmosphere and narrative psychology.
