Bernie Sanders is a United States senator from Vermont and a central figure of American progressivism. A former mayor of Burlington and veteran member of the House of Representatives, he won election to the Senate in 2006 and became nationally prominent for campaigning for economic and social reforms, with emphasis on reducing income inequality and expanding access to health care.
His proposals resemble European social-democratic policies, particularly those of the Nordic countries, and include support for a universal health-care system, parental leave, action on global warming, LGBT rights, and electoral reform. He is also known for his criticism of U.S. foreign policy—he was among the earliest opponents of the Iraq War—and for positions opposing surveillance programs and discrimination within the justice system.
Regardless of party affiliations—he has worked in coalition with Democrats and maintained a regional tie to the Vermont Progressive Party—Sanders became an influential voice within the American progressive movement. His public legacy is linked to popularizing redistributive policies and renewing the debate on social justice in contemporary U.S. politics.
