Bernie Tiede (Bernhardt Tiede II) is an American funeral director whose notoriety stems from the murder of Marjorie “Marge” Nugent, a wealthy widow, in November 1996 in Carthage, Texas. He worked as an assistant funeral director and later as Nugent’s manager and companion; his intimate relationship with Nugent and the subsequent alteration of her will to benefit him were central to the case. Originally convicted of first-degree murder, Tiede was initially sentenced to 50 years in prison; after appeals and retrials, he received a life sentence.
