Betsy Repelius (Johanna Elisabeth Repelius) was a Dutch painter and watercolorist, known for small genre scenes centered on a single figure. Trained by teachers such as Petrus Franciscus Greive, Karel Frans Philippeau and, at the Rijksakademie (1873–1876), August Allebé, she developed figurative work in which the figures often look downward or to the side, giving the paintings an intimate tone. Belonging to a wealthy family in the cheese trade, Repelius used her financial independence to build, in 1889, a residence with a studio designed by Joseph Cuypers; the young Piet Mondrian even executed decorative paintings on the ceiling. A member of Arti et Amicitiae from 1875, she regularly took part in the society’s exhibitions and maintained close ties with contemporary artists such as Thérèse Schwartze and Lizzy Ansingh. Her fortune prompted criticism of her status as a “dilettante,” but it also allowed her to support philanthropic institutions, especially those serving the blind, and to bequeath possessions and works to friends and colleagues. The contents of her studio were left, among others, to the painter Marie Heineken, creating a link between Amsterdam’s artistic networks at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth.
