Bill Sarni (William Florine Sarni) was an American professional baseball catcher who played in the Major Leagues in the mid-1950s. A native of Los Angeles, he was known for his defensive play: he led fielding percentage and assists statistics in the minor leagues and in the National League, earning a reputation as a reliable presence behind the plate. Sarni made his MLB debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1951 and, after time in the minors where he was an American Association All‑Star, became the Cardinals’ starting catcher in 1954, a season in which he hit .300 with nine home runs and led the league’s catchers in fielding percentage. In 1956 he was traded to the New York Giants, where he again led catchers in assists that year. His playing career was cut short by a heart attack during spring training in 1957, at age 29. The Giants kept him on the club in a coaching role. He later left professional baseball and worked in the financial markets. Over five MLB seasons he compiled a .263 batting average, 22 home runs and strong defensive numbers; his legacy is that of a catcher valued for his defense and steady presence in the mid-1950s of American baseball.
