Robert Holbrook "Dr. Bob" Smith was an American surgeon and cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), a movement that influenced public health policy and support practices for people with substance use disorders in the 20th century. A Dartmouth graduate with postgraduate training at Rush Medical College, he struggled for many years with alcoholism, a condition that temporarily removed him from clinical practice until his decisive meeting with Bill Wilson in 1935. The conversation between Smith and Wilson on June 10, 1935, is regarded as the first AA meeting; from that encounter they developed and promoted the Twelve-Step program. Smith played a central role in consolidating the group, personally helping thousands of people pursue abstinence and advancing public recognition of recovery as an attainable process. Known among peers by the nickname "Prince of the Twelve Steps," Dr. Bob remained active in the movement until his death from colon cancer in 1950. His legacy includes the spread of a model of mutual support and practical spirituality that spawned numerous sister organizations and remains active internationally.
