Boris Vasilievich Spassky was a Russian chess grandmaster, later naturalized French, and the tenth World Chess Champion. Emerging early—he won the World Junior Championship in 1955 and became a Grandmaster by qualifying for the 1956 Candidates Tournament—he was noted for a versatile style able to adapt to opponents and balance technique with tactics. That flexibility proved decisive in key matches, such as his victory over Mikhail Tal in the 1965 Candidates and, above all, in winning the world title against Tigran Petrosian in 1969.

His reign as champion lasted until 1972, when he lost the title to Bobby Fischer in Reykjavík, a match that drew international attention for its strong symbolic charge during the Cold War. Despite the defeat, Spassky remained competitively relevant—he won the Soviet Championship in 1973 and continued to play in major tournaments and matches, including a rematch with Fischer in 1992.

Spassky’s career combines early talent, notable sporting achievements, and a lasting legacy in modern chess: he is remembered both for his strategic skill and for his influence on subsequent generations of players.
