Bruce Babbitt is an American lawyer and politician whose public work focused on environmental management and natural resource administration. He served as governor of Arizona in the late 1970s and early 1980s, where he pursued tax reform, public health initiatives, and water-management policies, after serving as the state’s attorney general prior to leading the executive branch. In the 1980s he led the League of Conservation Voters and launched a bid for the 1988 Democratic presidential primaries. In 1993 he was appointed U.S. Secretary of the Interior, a post he held for two terms under the Clinton administration. As secretary, he was known for advocating ecological restoration, strengthening the Endangered Species Act, and creating the National Landscape Conservation System to protect scenic and historic public lands. His public legacy is tied to the conservation of federal lands and efforts to balance environmental protection with multiple-use demands, often amid regional political resistance, notably over grazing fees on public lands. After leaving government he returned to legal practice, working as counsel in environmental litigation.
