Bruno Loerzer was a pilot and officer in the German air service, noted for his role as an ace in World War I and for command positions in the Luftwaffe during the Nazi era. As a fighter pilot he scored 44 victories and received prominent decorations, including the Pour le Mérite in 1918, rising to the rank of Hauptmann by the end of the conflict. His leadership of Jagdgeschwader III and Jasta 26 showed tactical skill and helped introduce the Fokker D.VII to his pilots.
In the interwar period he joined and led civil aviation organizations and, from 1935, rejoined the German air force through personal connections with Hermann Göring. During World War II he commanded II Air Corps, taking part in the western campaigns and the invasion of the Soviet Union, and received the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross in 1940.
In 1943 he was removed from corps command after heavy losses in the unit, but he retained administrative posts in the Luftwaffe until 1944. Captured by the United States in 1945, he remained detained until 1948. His career combines early military distinction and an administrative role in an air force closely tied to the Nazi regime, leaving a legacy marked by both battlefield achievements and institutional controversies.
