Buckminster Fuller (Richard Buckminster Fuller) was an American designer, architect, inventor and writer whose work combined engineering, geometry and social thought in search of efficient, low-cost solutions for housing and transportation. He became internationally known for the geodesic domes, lightweight and strong structures that exemplify his priority of maximizing performance while conserving resources. Over his life he published extensively — including 28 books — and meticulously documented his research and experiments.
Fuller coined concepts and tools aimed at global planning, such as the Dymaxion Map and the World Game, which reflected his vision of planetary optimization and rational resource use. A proponent of what he called Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science, he anticipated issues of renewable energy and sustainability, arguing that technology should raise quality of life with reduced consumption.
Academically recognized with dozens of honorary doctorates and multiple honors, he received the American Institute of Architects’ Gold Medal in 1970. His legacy endures in projects, museums and in his influence on design and architecture practices and community movements focused on efficiency and sustainable planning.
