Budgie, the stage name of Peter Edward Clarke, is an English drummer known for his central role in the post-punk and new wave scenes. He rose to prominence as a member of pioneering groups such as Big in Japan and The Slits — with whom he played on the album Cut — before becoming established in the lineup of Siouxsie and the Banshees. Initially invited in 1979 as a temporary replacement, Budgie joined the band permanently beginning with the album Kaleidoscope and remained its principal percussionist for many years, shaping the group’s distinctive rhythmic sound. At the same time he co-founded The Creatures with Siouxsie Sioux, a project that explored percussive and atmospheric textures distinct from the parent band’s repertoire. His collaborative work includes partnerships with figures such as John Cale, Leonard Eto and John Grant, showing versatility and influence beyond the British alternative circuit. In critical recognition, Spin magazine listed him among the greatest drummers in alternative music, underscoring his technical and creative legacy in the history of alternative rock.
