Cadel Lee Evans is a former Australian cyclist who excelled in both mountain biking and road racing. In his early years he achieved success in cross‑country, winning the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in 1998 and 1999 and representing Australia in two Olympic editions in that discipline. His transition to the road, begun in 2001, led him to build a top‑level career in three‑week stage races and time trials. Evans became one of the sport’s most prominent names by winning the Road World Championship in 2009 and, above all, by winning the Tour de France in 2011 — one of the few non‑Europeans to lift the trophy and the first Australian to win the race. Before that he had finished second in the Tour in 2007 and 2008 and reached podiums in the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España. Known for his endurance and aerobic capacity, he earned respect for tactical turnarounds in decisive time trials and for competitive longevity, winning major races at ages when many riders decline. He retired from professional racing in 2015, leaving a legacy as a pioneer of Australian cycling on the world stage.
