Camillo Cavour

Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, was a statesman and political leader essential to the nineteenth‑century process of Italian unification. Born in Turin, he first made his mark as an entrepreneur and a modernizer of agriculture and industry in Piedmont, applying liberal principles and driving fiscal, banking, and infrastructure reforms that strengthened the economy of the Kingdom of Sardinia. A pragmatic politician of moderate liberal persuasion, Cavour rose to ministerial office and in 1852 became prime minister of the Kingdom of Sardinia. He built a constitutional state capable of projecting power and influence on the European stage, using diplomacy and alliances—especially with France—to weaken Austrian dominance on the peninsula. The architect of the foreign policy that culminated in the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861, Cavour combined state action and strategic agreements with national initiatives, such as integrating the northern territories and coordinating with Giuseppe Garibaldi’s forces. He was the first prime minister of the Kingdom of Italy and is remembered as the principal political architect and administrator of Italian unification.
