Camillo Olivetti was an Italian electrical engineer and entrepreneur, best known for founding Olivetti & Co., a manufacturer that would become a benchmark in office machines and, later, in computers and printers. Born into a bourgeois family in Ivrea, Piedmont, he graduated in industrial engineering and deepened his studies in electrotechnics under the guidance of Galileo Ferraris. International experience marked his training: he worked in London with electrical measuring instruments, accompanied Ferraris to conferences in the United States, and visited Thomas Edison’s laboratories. He also served as an assistant at Stanford, where he experimented with electrical applications that shaped his technological outlook. His letters from the U.S. emphasize his admiration for American industrial and social dynamism, which guided his business ambitions. On returning to Italy, Olivetti combined technical knowledge and an entrepreneurial spirit to establish a company noted for innovation in products and industrial organization. His business legacy endured: Olivetti was later led by his son Adriano and is remembered as a milestone in the Italian technology industry.
